Unemployment and The Great Depression

I keep hearing people compare the current 9% unemployment rate to the 25% unemployment rate during the great depression. I suspect there is a major difference in who was counted. During the 1930’s most women didn’t work, but I doubt they were counted as “unemployed”. Anyone know if this is a correct assumption?

If it’s true, and women are about half the population then the true unemployment rate during the great depression could have been as high as 62.5%.

This seems too obvious for me to be the only one to have thought of…is my logic flawed?

WiFi Log Law Coming Soon?

There is a bill that would require home user to keep a 2 year log of everyone using their internet service. I doubt the people behind this bill have the technical expertise to do this themselves. Many wireless routers don’t do this out of the box and setting up additional software to do this can be time consuming and confusing.

Some good news; FON keeps logs of everyone that uses your wifi! Not only are the FON Routers less expensive then most they meet this requirement out of the box!

The Big 3 Bailout

Quick summary of the Big 3 Bailout.

  • Average UAW earns $28.00 per hour in 2007 (source UAW)
  • Average American Worker earns $11.95 per hour in 2007 (source NYT)
  • Lots more wage detail here

There are lots of other things I could dig into (health care, legacy costs, etc) but this is a summary. I’m having trouble seeing how Americans who earn $11.95 an hour should bail out Americans who earn $28.00 per hour.

We have 3 large companies on the brink of failure. Ford is in the best the shape with enough cash to operate through 2009. GM and Chrysler are likely to run out of cash in early 2009. Let GM and Chrysler fail, let Ford scoop up the business and become a strong solvent company. That’s good business.

That’s a quick summary.

DIY Fireplace Gate

I moved into a new house this year and I’m using a coal stove. It’s a large stove and I wanted a gate around it to keep the kids safe. My hearth is over 50″ deep and over 60″ wide so I needed a large gate. I was only able to find a couple online and they were too short and didn’t adjust to the proper size. The best I found adjusted by adding 8″ or 24″ pieces, and I couldn’t find the 8″ pieces for sale anywhere. The total cost would have exceed $300.00. I would have been left with an awkwardly shaped gate with a small swinging door. It wasn’t going to work.

I found a great solution that required only minor tweaking. Total cost was just over $200.00 and it’s much nicer then the out of the box solutions.

What you’ll need:

I’d like to purchase an addition support foot but I haven’t found where to buy one yet. For now I’m using the assembly guides that came for installation, they’re ugly but functional.

The gate is very study and swings all the way open so I can easily access all sides of the stoves. If you wanted to make the entire thing easily removable you can use the other Kidco G20c hardware. It fits the Summer Infant brand perfectly. I don’t have a way to lock it but don’t need it. My kids know not to touch the stove, this is more to prevent running kids and flying toys from trouble.
